The New York Giants are official in their offseason, and one of the big priorities for this offseason is getting the right franchise quarterback. Let’s face it. The Giants have been a hot mess as of late. They need a solid quarterback to help lead the team to some victories.
The team parted ways with quarterback Daniel Jones late last year, so now, they don’t have anyone taking the reigns. Jones wasn’t a bad quarterback, but he didn’t seem like the best fit for the Giants.
Vikings QB Sam Darnold Seemed to Fold Under Pressure
Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold has been mentioned more than once as a possible candidate to come to New York (again) and be the Giants’ franchise quarterback. But, the Vikings’ high-profile loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Monday, January 13, didn’t put Darnold in the best light.
“Darnold’s awful play Monday night in a 27-9 loss the Los Angeles Rams, on the heels of a similarly horrific effort in a 31-9 loss to the Detroit Lions that determined the NFC North champion, may have blown up that possibility,” noted Ed Valentine in a January 14 feature for Big Blue View.
Darnold completed 25 of 40 passes for 245 yards. He just didn’t look good out there, either.
“He was often uncertain where to go with the ball and took nine sacks, many of them his own fault,” Valentine stated. “He threw an interception. He lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown.”
Valentined added, “A week earlier, Darnold was just 18 of 41 (43.9%) for 166 yards in that critical, lopsided loss to the Lions that cost the Vikings a chance to host a playoff game. ESPN Research showed that 23 of Darnold’s 81 passes in those two games (28.4%) were considered off-target.”
So, in Minnesota’s two most important games of the season, “their resurgent quarterback came up small,” Valentine said
Darnold will probably part ways with the Vikings after this season, and it may be looking less likely now that he’ll come to the Giants.
Giants Franchise Quarterback Idea
Former New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz has an idea of who the team should get for their new quarterback.
In a January 14 interview with Sports Lens, Cruz said he believes they bring on Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning in next year’s draft, when he’s available. Arch, of course, is the nephew of Eli Manning, who the Giants remember snagging them two Super Bowl titles.
“I mean, he checks all the boxes,” Cruz said. “If you look at New York, guy with Manning on the back of his jersey in New York, one of the fastest Mannings that we’ve seen at the quarterback position, and also spins it well and throws the ball downfield and makes big plays in that regard. I just think he checks a lot of the boxes.”
Cruz added that Arch is “the type of quarterback that you need to win games in the NFL.”
Winning, of course, is what the New York Giants want to do next season. They can’t have another dismal 3-14 record.
