Did you know that you can rent an island? So, if you really want to take the idea of “getting away” to the next level, having your own bona fide island for a while may do it. I actually remember a friend of mine in high school whose family owned an entire island. It was a super small island, but it was still very cool. But, if you don’t want to have to actually buy an island, you can rent an island in a beautiful area for a good price.

You Can Rent an Island

The experts at Travel and Leisure have put together a tally of some of the top private islands that you can rent in the country. “You can rent private islands located around the world on Airbnb, and in many cases, these exclusive stays cost less than hotel accommodations,” they write. “We’ve rounded up 10 incredible private island rentals, including a beautiful home near Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and a mangrove island surrounded by crystal-clear blue waters in Belize.”

One of their favorite private islands to rent is in Poulsbo, Washington, with Travel and Leisure calling it a great place to “unplug and unwind” surrounded by nature. “Guests can spend their days kayaking on the lake and nights grilling and spending time by a campfire,” Travel and Leisure states. “With three bedrooms and two and a half baths, this home can sleep six guests.” If you look at photographs of this spot on AirBnb.com, it looks beautiful and definitely tucked away. “Situated in the middle of peaceful Island Lake in Poulsbo, Washington sits the beautifully updated and modern Island Lake Cabin,” the Airbnb.com listing states. Count me in.

Another of their favorite islands to rent is a rustic log cabin in Lupton, Michigan, which is getting near the northern part of the Mitten in Michigan. “Enjoy lake life on this group-friendly, eight-acre private island in Michigan,” Travel and Leisure states. “This log cabin sleeps up to 12 guests with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, and it features tons of fun amenities like an outdoor kitchen and fire pit, yard games, and access to kayaks and paddleboards.” The property’s Airbnb.com listing adds, “This is the perfect getaway to unwind and enjoy the serene beauty of a private island retreat all to yourself.” Also, “This private island features an off-grid A-frame log cabin powered by 32 solar panels, offering all the amenities of a luxury home within a rustic cabin setting.”

For those who want to rent an island in North Carolina, the experts at Travel and Leisure also recommend the Outer Banks Private Island in Manteo/Nags Head. “This private island in the Roanoke Sound is accessible only by boat, so it’s the perfect place to get away from it all for a few days. With three bedrooms, the island can host up to five guests, making it ideal for a small group.” The property’s Airbnb.com listing says it’s “accessible only by boat in the Roanoke Sound” and is “a short boat ride from Nags Head Causeway or Manteo waterfront.” They boast that it’s especially good for “fishing, birding” and star gazing.

So, if you want to rent an island, there are some options for you. If you’re looking for gorgeous islands, too, America has plenty of them.
