We’re only at week five for the NFL season, and there are already a ton of surprises. The biggest surprise, when it comes to NFL quarterbacks, is that Aaron Rodgers is out for the full season. I’m actually pretty bummed about this news. As a lifelong Detroit Lions fan, I’ve always been rooting against Rodgers, but I really wanted to see him come back to life with the New York Jets and make something wonderful happen. But, he’s out with an injury, and now the season’s list of the quarterbacks who have overperformed in 2023 is all messed up.
So, here we are, five weeks into the NFL season. Who are the quarterbacks who are defying expectations and preforming better than expected? We all know that guys like Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes are doing well. That’s a given. Those guys are elite players, and even though both have stumbled a bit this season, they’re at the top of the numbers graph. But, when it comes to quarterbacks who have overperformed in 2023, read on for my personal list.
Jared Goff
As a Detroit Lions fan, you knew I had to put Jared Goff on this list. But, I’m not being biased. Goff’s performance this season is picking up right where he left off last season. Of course, he did have a nasty interception during the Seattle Seahawks game. But, those are few and far between. He’s proved himself to be not only a solid player with reach chops on the field but a strong and humble leader amongst his teammates and coaching staff.
Josh Allen
This past week was a big one for Josh Allen. The quarterback for the Buffalo Bills got off to a shaky start, but he’s rebounded the past few games. Now, he’s tied for the most combined touchdowns among all quarterbacks. He’s obviously got huge potential; now, he just has to deliver on it.
Kirk Cousins
With his contract up in the air, some have wondered if it’s Kirk Cousins’ time to step down or at least head to another team. But, his stats are still nearly unbeatable. Cousins had a poor performance during the Minnesota Vikings’ first win of the 2023 season, but the key word here is “win.” He still found a way to win the game, and that’s all that matters. He’s extremely accurate, and that makes him one of the best.
Justin Herbert
Sure, the Los Angeles Chargers aren’t one of the big teams to watch this year. But, don’t blame that on Justin Herbert. This guy is solid. He’s an incredible athlete with a strong arm and major skills as a quarterback. If the Chargers could get the people around him together, they could be one of the most successful teams in the NFL right now.
C.J. Stroud
Talk about pressure. C.J. Stroud is a rookie, and he’s at the helm of the rebuilding effort at the Houston Texans. He’s doing a great job, too. Stroud has an excellent and accurate throw, and that makes him a weapon with the Texas. And, boy, do they need a weapon.
