If you had said early in the season that the Detroit Lions would be catapulting up the NFL Power Rankings in Week 16, I wouldn’t have believed you. But, here we are.

The Eagles are still at the top of the NFL Power Rankings for the fourth straight week, but the Lions are gaining traction on them. After all, the Eagles barely won their early season game against the Lions. Remember that?

NFL.com is calling the Lions “America’s Team in the truest sense.” They also say the team continues to “capture the nation’s imagination and make their move up the big board, a stunning turn of events for a team left dead and buried after a 1-6 start.”

Elsewhere, the defending Super Bowl champion, the Los Angeles Rams, have been eliminated from playoff contention. How crazy is that? The Rams, of course, are the team with former Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Regarding the No. 1 Eagles, NFL.com states, “Sometimes it’s just about taking care of business. The Bears put up more of a fight than expected but were still no match for a Philadelphia team that made the big plays when necessary in a 25-20 win at Soldier Field. Jalen Hurts threw two interceptions in a game for the first time this season, but otherwise kept his MVP credentials legitimate with three rushing touchdowns — moving within one ground score of Cam Newton’s single-season NFL record for QBs.”

The Detroit Lions moved from No. 10 to 7 this week. NFL.com comments, “The Lions can win ugly, too. Dan Campbell’s Grit Monsters went to the Meadowlands and struggled to break through against a stellar Jets defense … until it mattered most. Facing fourth-and-inches at midfield with two minutes to play, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson (his head coach stock going up by the week) called a brilliant misdirection play that resulted in a 51-yard touchdown for Brock Wright. The Lions have won six of seven with an opportunity to move into NFL playoff position if they can take out the Panthers on Sunday.”
