The 2023 NFL Free Agency kicks off Monday (March 13). We’re just a few hours in, and things are already exciting.
The Detroit Lions are one of the most buzzed-about teams going into the upcoming season. With that in mind, all eyes are on general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell to see what kind of talent they’re able to bring to Detroit to, hopefully, cap off the perfect team.
The Lions made a big move right away during the Free Agency. The team, according to the NFL Network, are getting ready to officially sign former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Cameron Sutton.
The agreement is reportedly worth $33 million over the next three seasons. In addition, the deal adds $22.5 million in guaranteed monies. That’s a lot of money, so hopefully the pick is worth it. One thing is certain: The Lions needed a solid cornerback. This is one are that has been weak, so it’s no surprise that Holmes and Campbell were willing to put a lot of money into this pick.
The move is a little surprising, though, since the Lions were heavily rumored to be looking at bringing Los Angeles Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey to Detroit. But, before they could do that, he was traded to the Miami Dolphins.
In other news, The Lions were at the Purdue Boilermakers’ pro day last week and had a special meeting with quarterback Aidan O’Connell. They were also looking at tight end Payne Durham and other players while in town. The tidbit comes from Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network, who says they met with O’Connell after the team’s workout.
Since the Lions had a winning a season last year, the team won’t have the top draft picks. Hence, the team is going to be looking at a later-round draft pick on a backup quarterback with some promise. That’s where O’Connell comes into play. We’ll see what happens.
