Let’s rewind to the 2022 draft. If you recall, the Detroit Lions had the No. 2 pick because, well, our season was simply that bad. So, who did we snag in the NFL draft? It was Michigan’s own Aidan Hutchinson, who was graduating from the University of Michigan. Now, some NFL critics are saying that Hutchinson is one Detroit Lions player that could set records this year.
This Detroit Lions Player Could Set Records:
NFL insider Matt Lombardo recently chatted with a handful of NFL peeps about which second-year players could have a fantastic 2023 season. He was totally impressed with one Detroit Lions player, and he expects big things from this guy in the coming year.
“He had a really nice rookie year, but I think Aidan Hutchinson is going to really breakout,” Lombardo said in the chat. “I’m not saying he’s Nick Bosa, T.J. Watt, or those guys. But, I think he’ll take a big step, I wouldn’t be surprised if he has 15 or 20 sacks this year.”
It’s certainly impressive that Lombardo thinks Hutchinson will have 15 to 20 sacks this season. The current all-time record for Detroit Lions sacks was 15 by Robert Porcher. Moreover, the NFL’s all-time record for the most sacks in a season is 22.5 from Michael Strahan in 2001.
I, personally, believe that Hutchinson should have been picked for the Defensive Player of the Year last year, for the rookie option. He was passed over, just by a hair. But, I think he could actually win Defensive Player of the Year this year. That’s if he plays his cards right.
As a Lions fan, it’s so fun to see Hutchinson on the team, since he’s a hometown boy. It’s rare when you get to root for a local player on a NFL team. More over than not, players are just picked from across the country based on skills and how they would fit on the team. So, it’s nice to actually have a local guy on the Lions’ squad. Let’s keep him here. Hutchinson was also recently named one of the NFL’s best players under 25.
