I get that things can get desperate towards the end of the season in the NFL. But, sometimes teams make some rash decisions in the heat of the moment that just don’t make sense. It’s kind of like those Snicker bars commercials, where people are making stupid decisions because they’re hungry. NFL teams are extra hungry for wins in December, and that might cause them to freak out and make some really, really bad decisions. That, my friend, is why the Eagles’ Matt Patricia promotion is the nail in the coffin for this team’s end of the season.
Listen. I don’t want to be mean here. No disrespect to Patricia, but there’s really no good reasoning why the Eagles are tapping him to be the defense play-caller in Monday’s (Dec. 18) Philadelphia Eagles vs. Seattle Seahawks game. They’re handing over Sean Desai’s duties to this guy, and it has me scratching my head.
Sure, the Eagles have had some tough games when it comes to their defense. They’ve lost the past two of their games. But, they’re still 10-3, and it would be pretty much impossible for them to not make it to the playoffs. So, why totally jump ship?
What’s more, look at Patricia’s record. He doesn’t really have a lot of success in major coaching positions. Don’t they remember that Patricia was on the field for the New England Patriots back in 2018, when the Patriots lost to the Eagles in Super Bowl LII? Are they trying to thank Patricia for that win by giving him this new responsibility? I’m joking, of course. But, if you look at that year’s Patriots team, the defense was dismal. They surely would have won the Super Bowl with a stronger defense. Then, after Patricia left the Patriots for Detroit, their defense once again become one of the strongest in the league. Coincidence? No way.
After the Patriots fell in 2017 in the Big Game, Patricia went to the Detroit Lions and served as their head coach. As a longtime fan and follower of the Lions, I remember that era being, well, dismal. Let’s actually call it tragic. His three years in Detroit felt like an eternity. During his time in the D, he wasn’t able to pull together any decent kind of defense, or offense, for that matter.
So, here we are, heading into “Monday Night Football.” If you’re an Eagles fan, you should be worried, as quarterback Jalen Hurts is probably not playing due to an “illness.” You should also be worried because of the Patricia situation. But, if you’re a Seattle fan, you should also be queasy. Their quarterback Geno Smith is probably going to miss this game. So, this one may still be an Eagles win. However, the next three Eagles games include matchups against the Giants and Cardinals, which could prove more difficult for the newly anointed Patricia and company. Things will shake out over time, but for now, I’m sending my condolences to the Eagles. Send me your thoughts on X here and Facebook here.
