UPDATE: The Buffalo Bills playoff game vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers at Highmark Stadium has been moved to 4:30 p.m. Monday (Jan. 15) due to the winter storm.

Why do the Buffalo Bills have an outdoors stadium? It really doesn’t make sense. These guys are as far north as it gets in the US, and yet, they still have an outdoor stadium. Plus, every year, there’s at least one game that gets moved from Highmark Stadium or almost gets moved. It appears the latter is the case this time. The Buffalo Bills are hosting a home playoff game, and while having the homefield advantage is usually a good thing, it’s not this time. Dangerous lake-effect snow is expected for the Buffalo Bills vs. Pittsburgh Steelers game. But, while there have been rumors that the game might get moved, it’s a go. So, what’s the Buffalo Bills weather?

Buffalo Bills Weather:

According to AccuWeather, “life-threatening travel risks” are expected for the Buffalo Bills game near Orchard Park, New York on Sunday (Jan. 14). (Now moved to Monday, Jan. 15, as indicated in the update.)

AccuWeather expert meteorologists predict a “dangerous lake-effect snow band, which can dump one  to three feet of snow near Orchard Park and the Buffalo Bills Highmark Stadium from Saturday night through Monday morning, including around the time of the scheduled football game on Sunday.” Yes, that’s really one to three feet of the white stuff.

It’s possible we won’t even be able to see the players on the field, because of the low visibility. I have to watch this game. I love a good snow globe game, but this could be too much. Also, I just hope it’s safe for all involved.

The Buffalo Bills have even announced they’re offering $20 an hour to those who can shovel snow at Highmark Stadium ahead of the game.

“While some people are speculating about the game itself, our concerns aren’t about the game or the field conditions, but more importantly the safety of players and fans during the game and fans safely traveling to and from the game,” AccuWeather Chief video meteorologist Bernie Rayno said. “Travel in that intense band of snow will be next to impossible, and some motorists may become stranded, which can quickly escalate to a life-threating emergency, as we tragically saw in the Buffalo area during the blizzard just before Christmas 2022.”

AccuWeather chief meteorologist Jon Porter added, “The intense band of snow predicted can set up between Lackawanna and West Seneca on the northern side to near Hamburg on the southern side – including the Orchard Park area. The band can remain nearly stationary from later Saturday into Monday morning with some oscillations at times by a few miles south or north.” He added that because of the snow band, “it will be a full-fledged blizzard with snow falling at the rate of 2-3 inches or more per hour, complete whiteouts, winds gusting to 50 mph or even higher, and AccuWeather RealFeel® temperatures of -10F or even lower, which can result in hypothermia and frostbite within 10 minutes for anyone not dressed appropriately.”

Porter also said that the travel can be particularly dangerous, “because of the relative proximity of Pittsburgh and Buffalo – some fans may be traveling to and from Pittsburgh to Buffalo for the game and are not as familiar with the intensity and dramatic changes that can occur over short distances with lake-effect snow bands such as this in that area of New York.”

So, needless to say, be prepared. If you’re going to the game, make sure to have an emergency kit with you, including food, water, a first aid kit, blankets and more. For more on the Buffalo Bills weather, go here.
