What’s cool about boxing is that when it comes to female boxers, it’s not just about looks. In my opinion, sometimes professional wrestling highlights female wrestlers for their looks. Not that those ladies can’t fight, but a lot of the entertainment value in professional wrestling when it comes to females is their looks. In real boxing, it’s all about these ladies’ skills and fight factor. So, let’s get into the female boxers who are the best in 2024 and the best female boxer in the world.
Best Female Boxers in the World
I’m going to get into the best female boxer in the world, but first, just a reminder that the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris is on the way, and that event will highlight a bunch of great female and male boxers in the world. Boxing first appeared at the modern Olympic Games in 1904, and boxing has in the Summer Games ever since, except for the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm, because Swedish law banned boxing at that point in history. Team U.S.A. athletes dominate in the sport of boxing and have won the most medals overall at a whopping 117. Right behind the USA is Cuba with 78 medals and Great Britain with 62 medals. Women’s boxing has been part of the Olympic Games since the London 2012 games.
“Only amateur boxers are allowed to compete, which means the Olympic Games are often the starting point of a glittering career for some of the biggest names in the sport, including none other than Muhammad Ali,” the official Olympics website states. Also, “between 1984 and 2012, male boxers were required to wear protective headgear, but the rule was abandoned for the 2016 Rio Games,” although “female boxers are still required to wear head guards.” So, only amateur boxers can compete in the Olympic, and hence, you won’t see any of the ladies in this story at the Olympic Games this year.
So, let’s get into the best female boxer in the world in 2024, as well as some other big names.
It’s pretty apparent that middleweight Claressa Shields from Flint, Michigan, is the greatest female boxer of today. She’s the current middleweight undisputed champion. Shields is the only boxer, male or female, that holds all four major world titles, WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO, at the same time in two different weight classes. That makes her the best. She’s also a two-time Olympic gold medalist. Now, Shields is moving up two weight classes to take on women’s WBC heavyweight champion Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse in July at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. She really has no fear.
Other big names include lightweight and super light weight Katie Taylor and minimumweight Seniesa Estrada.
Taylor, an Irish professional boxer, holds an Olympic gold medal. Now, she’s pro. As a professional boxer, she’s beaten Jessica McCaskill, Victoria Bustos, Eva Wahlstrom and more. She’s the current undisputed lightweight champion and undisputed super lightweight champion.
Estrada, out of Los Angeles, is the WBA minimumweight champion. She’s beaten Marlen Esparza, Tenkai Tsunami and more.
