The Big Ten had a surprising weekend for a handful of its top-ranked teams in Week 2 of the college football season. I mean, who expected to see the University of Michigan totally tank against Texas? Sure, Texas was favored, but that game was ugly.
Let’s get into a summary of some of the best, and worst, Big 10 Week 2 highlights.
Big Ten Week 2 Highlights
No. 9 Michigan fell 31-12 to No. 3 Texas in Ann Arbor. I had friends at that game, and they say the crowd was angry. In another surprise, No. 8 Penn State just barely pulled off a 34-27 win over Bowling Green, and they were actually losing at halftime.
One of the biggest surprise came from Michigan State and new head coach Jonathan Smith pulling off an underdog win on the road against Maryland. During the game, Jonathan Kim made a 37-yard field goal with one second left to give Michigan State a 27-24 win over Maryland in the Big Ten opener for both teams on Saturday, Sept. 7.
When asked about the big win after the game in a postgame press conference, Smith played it cool.
“It’s still early. It’s Game 2,” he said. “We still have a lot of football left. But at the same time, some of the messages we’re preaching, some of the belief that comes from finding a way on the road, resiliently, with some durability throughout the game, that echoes some of our messages.”
Spartans quarterback Aidan Chiles, who came from Oregon State and played for Smith there, threw for 363 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions. While the three interceptions were rough, he certainly helped the team win.
“I didn’t play scared,” Chiles said in the press conference. “Last week, I basically lied to myself and told myself I wasn’t scared. I was. It is what it is — my first start. I don’t see it that way, but I was scared, I know. Today, I came out with the mentality of take a deep breath and go hunt. Today, we went out there and hunted.”
“Our goal was to make (Chiles) beat us throwing the football, and guess what? He did,” Maryland coach Mike Locksley said.
AP Top 25 Coaches Poll
As of Sept. 9, going into Week Three, in the AP Top 25 Coaches Poll, of the Big Ten teams, Ohio State is No. 2, Oregon is No. 6. Penn State is No. 8, USC is No. 11, Michigan is No. 16, Washington is No. 22 and Nebraska is No. 24. If Michigan State keeps doing what they’re doing, though, they could easily move into the Top 25 in a matter of weeks, if not next week.
