With the Detroit Lions enjoying another stellar season, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson will likely be one of the most sought-after candidates for a new head coaching position in 2025. In the past, he’s turned down such opportunities, but this year, the money and idea of headlining up an entire team himself might be enough to sway him.
One position that could open up would be the head coach with the Chicago Bears. ESPN’s Adam Schefter had a few on-point things to say about Johnson and head coaching gigs during Thursday’s episode of “Get Up.”
“Ben Johnson’s gonna be very, very selective about the place that he chooses to go, if he decides even to leave Detroit,” Schefter said. “He’s gonna be very careful,” Schefter said. “I don’t know that he desires to leave that division to head, in the division, to go to a place that you’re talking about the dysfunction that has existed within that organization. We’ll see, that’s up to him. But I believe he’s gonna be very selective in how he chooses to do his business.”
Later, after host Mike Greenberg said he thought Schefter would be very in-demand as a head-coaching candidate, Schefter agreed.
“He (Johnson) will be (sought after),” Schefter said. “But just because, let’s just say, there’s eight openings this year, and let’s just say, eight teams have him in their wish list, doesn’t mean he’s going to be interviewing with eight teams. I think if Ben Johnson is interviewing with anybody, this year, he’s interviewing with the intention that he’s going to take that job.”
So, yes, next season could finally be the season that the Lions go up against Johnson if he heads up another team.
Brad Berreman of SideLion Report sees Johnson going to the Jags.
“Doug Pederson is surely in his last weeks as the Jaguars’ head coach,” he wrote. “A current 2-7 record is lined up to get worse if quarterback Trevor Lawrence misses significant time with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder. Lawrence is reportedly not likely to play in Week 10 against the Minnesota Vikings, and beyond that his status is unclear.”
