The Detroit Lions have never won a Super Bowl. Heck, they haven’t even come close. But, after last season’s fantastic run, many are speculating that the Lions’ time has finally come.
Sure, we’re only a few weeks out from the 2023 Super Bowl, but fans and critics are already looking ahead to next season. Oddsmakers are saying that the Detroit Lions have the 11th best odds at snagging the Lombardi Trophy next season. That’s incredible, considering we’re usually at the bottom of the pack for Super Bowl odds.
Former Detroit Lions head coach Marty Mornhinweg is currently a contributor for The 33rd Team. He has some ideas about how to bring the Lions up to the level of a team that is Super Bowl worthy. He thinks, like many, that the success is in getting a solid defense.
In an ongoing series this offseason, people at The 33rd Team are naming three things each NFL team needs to improve if they want to get to the Big Game next year. According to Mornhinweg, Detroit’s tally of areas to improve are mainly in their defense.
“With the Detroit Lions, unlike other teams with several things to do to improve in 2023, there is only one thing they need to make a run at the Super Bowl. Why?” Mornhinweg says. “Because they’ve set their foundation. They’ve set it strong, with brick and mortar,” continues the former Lions coach. “I’m talking about the hard work that the whole organization puts in, especially the coaches and players. That’s all set. The team leaders, the players, need to make sure last season’s mentality carries over to 2023.”
Mornhinweg elaborated on how he wants to see Detroit add more solid players to the defensive roster. “They’ve already got some,” Mornhinweg says. “And they’ve got a heck of a coaching staff, led by defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. They play hard. They’re prepared. They put the hard work in. They just need some top-flight players.”
