The Detroit Pistons didn’t have a good season. Wait a minute. Let me rephrase that. The Detroit Pistons had a horrible season. The Motor City’s team finished this season with the worst record in the NBA at 17-65. Moreover, they only won four games dating back to the start of February. That’s simply bad.
But, sports fans in Detroit always have eternal hope for our teams. Look at the Lions. It’s been decades, but the Lions are finally, hopefully, starting to turn things around. The Tigers aren’t looking great this year. The Detroit Red Wings aren’t good, either.
But, this isn’t a pessimistic story. This is a positive one, because Detroit Pistons head coach Dwane Casey has announced that last Sunday (April 9) was his final game as the head coach for the Detroit Pistons, allowing him to start the next phase of his career and have more time for family. Spending time with loved ones is always a good thing.
Casey said that Pistons owner Tom Gores offered him a position in the Pistons’ front office, and he said yes.
He joined the Pistons as head coach in 2018. Before then, Casey was head coach of the Toronto Raptors. As I mentioned earlier, the Pistons’ season has been disasterous, so it’s not a big surprise that Casey is moving on. Regardless of how you feel about him as a coach, it’s nice to see him stay “in the family” and take a job in the front office. Once a Piston, always a Piston.
This whole thing makes me look back on the 1988-89 and 1989-90 Detroit Pistons teams, which most say are some of the greatest in NBA history. I was too young to enjoy it, but the team did beyond fantastic during the regular season. Moreover, the “Bad Boys” took on teams such as the Lakers and Celtics teams and devoured them. Can we have a repeat, please?
