The Kansas City Chiefs have been on a bye week, because they’re the No. 1 seed in the AFC, so they’re automatically in the playoffs for next weekend. As they prep for the big games up ahead, on Friday, January 10, Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid announced how he’s altered the team’s practice to get the guys in the best shape possible for another Super Bowl run.
The Chiefs will take on the Houston Texans on Saturday, January 18, at 4:30 p.m. Eastern time at home.
Kansas City Chiefs’ Best Going Up Against Each Other
During the team’s Friday press conference, Reid talked about a unique change that he’s making to the team’s preparations for their game against the Texans. Of course, at the time, he didn’t know who the guys would be playing next weekend, but these changes were made for any opponent.
Reid is having his No. 1 offense compete against his No. 1 defense during practice. This is really rare, because during the season, the team usually their starting offense and defense practice go up against backup players.
“These are all competitive guys, but put the 1s out there against each other, they really get competitive,” Reid said in the press conference. “That’s kind of a fun thing to be a part of.”
When elaborating more about why he made this change, Reid simply said, “It’s good for the guys. It’s good to get caught up like that on the speed part of it.”
He also said that, “You have to make sure your game’s at the peak each time you play.”
Chiefs HC Andy Reid Wants Players to Know What’s at Stake
Reid also is making sure his team, especially the younger players, know what’s at stake in the playoffs. It doesn’t matter how many games you’ve won up until this point. When you lose one game, you’re done. That’s it.
“It is single elimination,” Reid said. “That’s easier said than putting that in your brain and getting yourself right for every snap that you have at practice to practice hard and aggressive with. You’ve just got to make sure you really stay focused and don’t let distractions in there the best you can.”
Something that could make Saturday’s game a little easier for the Chiefs is that they’ve already played the Texans, so they know what to expect. Reid talked about the fact that the Chiefs have played any of their potential opponents for next weekend, and that turned out to be Houston.
“So, you got to go back though, (and) you can’t be content with that, so the four teams that we have a chance to potentially play in a couple weeks,” he said. “We’ve tried to hammer those out, and we’re going to continue to do that until we find out what the results are.”
Time will tell is Reid and the Chiefs get to another Super Bowl, but it would certainly be history-making if they are able to pull off a third Super Bowl win in a row.
