Super Bowl LIX was all about the Philadelphia Eagles.
Kansas City and Philadelphia went head-to-head for the Lombardi Trophy for the second time in three years. Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs were aiming to make history by being the first team to win three Super Bowls in a row.
But Jalen Hurts’ Eagles came out strong and won 40-22, snagging their second title ever. It was a dramatic night, to say the least.
Patrick Mahomes Has an Off Dates
You can’t really talk about Patrick Mahomes’ rough game without mentioning how his offensive line let him down almost every time he dropped back. And the Eagles made passing look easy because Kansas City’s pass rush was basically nonexistent. The Chiefs seemed outmatched by the Eagles up front.
While they might not be called a dynasty, the Philadelphia Eagles have come pretty close in the last eight years.
With their 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, they scored two Super Bowl titles in the last eight seasons — something only the Chiefs and Patriots can match over the last 13 years. They’ve been to three Super Bowls during that time and made the playoffs seven times.
They’ve also achieved this with two different coaches: Doug Pederson and Nick Sirianni. Only Chiefs coach Andy Reid can compare to the success Sirianni has had over the past four years. He’s made the playoffs every year, reached the Super Bowl twice, and now has one win under his belt. Plus, he’s got a solid 48-20 record in the regular season.
Not too shabby for a guy who almost got fired last season.
Next for the Kansas City Chiefs
Now, what’s next for the Chiefs? They have a future.
First off, they need to fill some key positions. They definitely need a left tackle. Joe Thuney, an All-Pro guard, stepped in at that spot since Week 15 because he was their best option. They also need a top edge rusher, or at least someone to team up with George Karlaftis. Besides Karlaftis, who led the team with eight sacks, no other edge defender managed to get to four sacks. Overall, they ranked 19th in sacks in 2024. They also need some upgrades at the offensive skill spots.
“We haven’t played that bad all year,” Kelce told reporters after the game. “Hats off to the Eagles, they got after us, all three phases…. Couldn’t get it going offensively. … Turnovers, penalties, playing behind the sticks on offense. Dropped passes, not taking advantage of the play calls and executing.”
On the subject of Kelce’s possible retirement, Mahomes said Kelce will always have a place, stating “He knows he’ll come back here with open arms. We love that guy not only for the football player, but for who he is every single day.”
Kansas City is still the top dog in the AFC; teams like the Ravens and Bills haven’t shown they can beat Mahomes and Andy Reid. But the Chiefs need to shake things up to get back on top of the NFL.
