Winter weather is on the way, and it’s time to get your car ready for snow, ice and the elements. That’s especially true if you live in the Midwest.
AAA is helping drivers get ready for the cold months with a checklist of things to do to prepare your vehicle for winter weather.
“Our number one service call during the winter is assisting members with dead batteries,” said Mike Hoshaw, vice president of automotive services, AAA East Central, in a press release. “In addition to addressing a car’s fall and winter maintenance needs, we advise motorists to focus on the health of their battery today, not when it’s too late.”
Here’s what to do to get your vehicle ready for the cold, according to AAA:
- Get your battery tested
- Examine antifreeze levels
- Add repellent to your windshield
- Check your tire pressure
- Clean your headlights
- Let a professional look at your brakes
Drivers should also have an emergency road kit in their vehicle that includes:
- Bag of abrasive material (sand, salt, cat litter) or traction mats
- Ice scraper with brush
- Jumper cables
- Gloves, hats and blankets—enough for everyone who may ride in your car
- First-aid kit
- Snow shovel
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Window washer solvent
- Cloth or roll of paper towels
- Warning devices (flares or triangles)
- Drinking water
- Non-perishable snacks (energy or granola bars)
- Extra clothes
- Basic toolkit (screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable wrench)
- Mobile phone preprogrammed with important numbers, including family and AAA for roadside assistance, plus a car charger compatible with that phone
