I remember growing up a Detroit Pistons fan. Literally everyone in Michigan was a massive fan, even people who had never been to Detroit. The team was stellar, and each season brought more excitement. Man, those were the day. Oh, I also remember being into the Chicago Bulls as a kid, because of Michael Jordan. But, what happened to the Pistons? The team had the worst record in the NBA last season. It’s been a long time since the team has been good, and that latest showing was just brutal. Now, the team is hoping a Detroit Pistons, Monty Williams match will help turn things around.
Detroit Pistons, Monty Williams News:
The Pistons have a new coach: Monty Williams. He was quite a find, as general manager Troy Weaver says he was pretty shocked when Williams became available earlier this year. “Monty represented the ideal prototype for our young team, but we didn’t expect him to be available,” Weaver said in a press release. “When he suddenly became available, we jumped at the opportunity to speak with him. That doesn’t mean the others in our process were not strong candidates. They were. But Monty is the prototype.”
Williams is the former New Orleans and Phoenix Suns head coach. He brought the Suns to the NBA Finals in 2021. He also helped salvage the team during his time in Phoenix. Williams was fired in May, when the Suns were eliminated in six games by the Denver Nuggets in the second round of the playoffs. Considering his solid record with the Sun, it was a surprise that Williams was let go. I think Detroit did the right thing by lapping him up. He has a lot of work to do, but with the kind of record that Williams has – even taking a team to the NBA Finals just two years ago – having him server as head coach can only help.
And if anyone says I’m crazy for thinking the Pistons franchise could turn around at this point, I have one word for them: Lions. If it can happen for the Lions, it can happen for any team, period. Check out what Dan Campbell of the Lions has to say about quarterback Jared Goff here.
