According to the Buffalo Bills, Damar Hamlin’s breathing tube was removed Thursday night (Jan. 5), enabling the Buffalo safety to talk to his family and care team.

It’s a “remarkable development” in a very scary story. Hamlin collapsed on the field in Cincinnati during a Monday night (Jan. 2) football game and went into cardiac arrest. From there, he was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center in critical condition. NFL fans around the globe have been praying for Hamlin to make a quick and full recovery, but it’s been a turbulant ride.

The Bills announced the good news of Hamlin being able to speak via Twitter.

Friday morning (Jan. 6), the Bills said the 24-year-old NFL star was able to speak with his team on FaceTime. What did he say? “Love you, boys.” Also, according to reports, he flexed with both arms, made a heart symbol and gave a thumbs up. It’s a very touching gesture.

During Monday’s night’s game, as soon as Hamlin hit the ground, the Bills medical staff called to put into play the NFL’s emergency action plan. Medical and sports personal are being praised for their swift action in what could have been a very deadly incident.

University of Cincinnati Medical Center doctors Timothy Pritts and William Knight IV met with the press following Hamlin’s hospitalization. They described his recovery as “fairly remarkable,” and that was before he could breathe without the tube.

“We can’t say enough about the quick actions of the Bills’ training staff and the physicians who were on the field with getting to him, recognizing that this was a very serious situation and responding and saving his life,” Pritts said.
