Pete Prisco of CBS Sports has put together his list of the top 100 NFL players for 2023. But, did he get it right? This list is obviously one man’s opinion. As a Lions fan, I personally think he should have gone with more than two Detroit Lions players. Jared Goff, the team’s quarterback, didn’t even get honorable mention. After his showing last season, I think he deserved it. (Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell agrees.)
Top 100 NFL Players:
But, I digress. In his list of the top 100 NFL players for 2023, Prisco named Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes the No. 1 player of the upcoming season. That makes sense, as Mahomes just won a second Super Bowl for his teams.
Of Mahomes, Prisco writes, “Mahomes led his Chiefs to his second Super Bowl title last February, beating the Philadelphia Eagles and winning both the regular-season and Super Bowl MVPs in the process. The man is on a roll. In the past four seasons, he has two Super Bowl victories and one loss in the Super Bowl. He also has two regular-season MVPs in the past five seasons.” He adds that since Mahomems is only 27, “that should scare the heck out of the rest of the NFL.” He hasn’t even hit his “prime” yet, which is when he would be in the best shape of his career.
Two other big quarterbacks made the top five on this list. The first is Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills, who landed in the No. 2 spot. He’s followed by Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals at No. 3.
The first Detroit Lion to appear on the list is OT Penei Sewell at No. 66. Of Sewell, Prisco writes, “He has developed into a top-tier right tackle, a brute who can dominate in the run game. He’s improving in pass protection as well.” The only other Lions on here is WR Amon-Ra St. Brown at No. 83, with Prisco writing, “He showed in 2022 that he was among the league’s best move-the-chain receivers with 64.2 percent of his catches going for first downs. He caught 106 passes with six touchdowns.” Find the full tally here.
