The Summer Olympic Games are set for Fri, July 26, 2024, to Sunday, Aug. 11, 2024, in Paris, France. The excitement is building in a major way. Now, USA Basketball has announced the 2024 Olympics USA Men’s Basketball Team. The 12 players selected will compete at the 2024 Olympic Games.
The 2024 Olympics USA Men’s Basketball Team
The 2024 USA Olympics USA Men’s Basketball Team combines 12 athletes with plenty of NBA experience, including the NBA’s scoring leader LeBron James, who already has two Olympic gold medals. I’m extremely happy with this year’s roster and think we have a solid chance on bringing home the gold. The 2024 roster includes Bam Adebayo (Miami Heat),Devin Booker (Phoenix Suns), Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors), Anthony Davis (Los Angeles Lakers), Kevin Durant (Phoenix Suns), Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves), Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers), Tyrese Haliburton (Indiana Pacers), Jrue Holiday (Boston Celtics), LeBron James (Los Angeles Lakers), Kawhi Leonard (L.A. Clippers) and Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics).
In total, the 2024 Olympics USA Men’s Basketball Team team already has 11 Olympic appearances and owns 10 Olympic gold medals. However, some of the guys will be at the Olympics representing the USA for the first time. Curry, Leonard, Embiid, Haliburton and Edwards are all first-time Olympians. Haliburton and Edwards both played for the U.S. team that finished fourth at the World Cup in Manila in 2023, though.
The Olympics USA Men’s Basketball Team has won four consecutive gold medals, since finishing with a bronze medal at the 2004 Athens Games. A lot of time and research went into picking this year’s squad. More than 40 players were in the running to go to the Paris Games, and just 12 were picked. The U.S. men have competed in basketball at the Olympics for a total of 19 times. They’ve won 19 medals, counting 16 gold, one silver and two bronze.
USA Basketball Men’s National Team managing director Grant Hill chose the players for this year’s team, and the USA Basketball Board of Directors made the final approval.
“These guys are up for the challenge. And they know what’s at stake,” Team USA managing director Grant Hill told TODAY. “The objective is to win a gold medal. No one cares who’s the leading scorer, who has the most minutes. The goal is to win a gold. They know that. They want that and they’re fired up.”
Hill also told TODAY that it was difficult to put this roster together. He started the process in late 2022.
“I don’t want to say it was easy,” he said, laughing. “I think the experience was so invaluable for those who’ve been a part of it — so important, so special, so unique — that they wanted to do it again.”
Who Will Coach the The 2024 Olympics USA Men’s Basketball Team?
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr will serve as the head coach for Team USA. He’s helped his team score four NBA titles. He was also an assistant on the 2021 team that won gold in Tokyo. So, Kerr has lots of experience and should be the right guy for the job. I think it’ll be an exciting year for Team USA with all these A-listers. Let’s go.
