Halloween is upon us, and that means it’s time to get spooked. The Midwest has plenty of haunted places, from thick forests to abandoned lighthouses.

The folks at Treetopia have put together a list of the most haunted places in each U.S. state, noting that they “particularly occur at venues like haunted houses, abandoned hospitals, deserted theaters and old cemeteries.”

“We scraped the ultimate online database of paranormal activity, Ghost Sightings of America, and the Shadowlands Haunted Places Index. We looked for not only the most haunted states but also the most haunted city and location within each state,” they said in the study. “Our main criteria were the number of recorded ghost sightings.”

So, which are the spookiest places in the Midwest?

In Illinois, the most haunted city is Rockford, and the most haunted location is at the Faust hotel. In Ohio, the most haunted city is Springfield, and the most haunted location is at Myers Hall at Wittenberg University.

Moving on to Michigan, the most haunted city is Monroe, and the most haunted location is the Old Paper Mill. In Indiana, the most haunted city is Richmond, and the most haunted location is at Earlham College.
