The color green is synonymous with the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles. You would literally never go to a Packers or an Eagles game and not see green in the crowd or on the field. But, there’s been some buzz lately that perhaps the NFL will be banning green from the upcoming Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles Week 1 game in Brazil, which will help open the 2024 NFL season. Now, the NFL is clarifying comments on banning green at the Packers, Eagles Brazil game.

Will the NFL Be Banning Green at the Packers and Eagles Game in Brazil?

Josh Jacobs did a podcast interview last week in which he mentioned that both the Eagles and Packers wouldn’t be allowed to wear green for their Week 1 game in Brazil. This got fans in an uproar. It’s pretty wild to imagine this game with the color green being banned.

The podcast interview happened during a recent chat on the Green Light with Chris Long. In the talk, Jacobs said that the Green Bay Packers have been told that they aren’t allowed to wear green during the Brazil game and their trip to South America. It sounds really crazy, right?

“They said that the part of Brazil we’re going to, you can’t even wear green at,” Jacobs said in the chat. “They said, I guess, something to do with the gangs and stuff.”

He also said that the same was true for the Philadelphia Eagles. So, is the banning green buzz true? Well, the talk got so hot on this topic that the NFL actually had to issue a statement about the rumor and set the record straight.

The NFL has released a statement regarding the color green ban. They say that fans and players will be allowed to wear green in Brazil. An NFL spokesman spoke to the Philadelphia Inquirer and said that when the game is played in early September, “You will see a stadium full of fans wearing the green of the Eagles and the green of the Packers.”

That said, Jacobs isn’t totally wrong. There actually is an informal ban on the color green in Brazil that impacts to the local soccer team. CBSSports.com’s Jeff Kerr discussed that informal ban in a story back in April.

“The Eagles-Packers game will be played at Corinthians Arena, which is home to the Brazilian soccer team Corinthians,” Kerr wrote. “The biggest rival for Corinthians is Palmeiras, who wear the color green. Corinthians has an informal ban on wearing green, as a former player was actually fined by the club a few years ago for wearing green cleats.”

So, the confusion probably came from the whole soccer band thing. Either way, it’s happy news is that if you’re going to the Eagles’ Brazil game, you can wear green. Frankly, it’s difficult enough to get American football fans into these overseas games, and it can also be a struggle for overseas sports fans to get into American football. So, the more rules the fans have to follow, the more difficult it’s going to be to get people excited about these American football games overseas.
