I lived in Columbus, Ohio, for four summer months back in, well, I can’t remember the year, but around 10 years ago. So, I know how fervent Ohio State fans can be, especially around football season. I remember having to stop off at a gas station with car trouble, and a guy there saw my Michigan license place and asked if I was a Wolverine. He said he wasn’t going to help me if I was a Michigan fan. I assured him I was a Spartan, and all was well again.

As it turns out, Northwestern wants to build a new stadium in Evanston, Illinois. But, some people in the Chicago suburb don’t want that to happen. That will mean more fanfare during football season.

The Wall Street Journal did a story about how Evanston residents have responded to the idea. One man spoke to the Wall Street Journal about the behavior of fans who travel into his area from other Big Ten teams. Northwestern is part of the Big Ten, but some of the other Big Ten teams’ fans are way more into sports than Northwestern fans, or so it seems.

The man owns a hot dog stand outside of Ryan Field. Here’s what The Wall Street Journal writes about his comments:

“Mr. Starkman, who is 56, said complaints about fans urinating on lawns and bushes after games are exaggerated and happen only when Northwestern hosts Ohio State. Wisconsin fans party very hard but are ‘nice and respectful,’ he said; Michigan State fans are ‘brilliant, lots of doctors and judges’; Michigan supporters are ‘ruffians’ but generally well behaved; Iowa’s are the friendliest in the Big Ten, and Nebraska’s fans are the most likely to arrive in pickups. ‘Ohio State fans are the only problem,’ Mr. Starkman said. ‘They have a monster following, and they think the world is their bathroom.'”

As a Spartan, I love seeing that MSU fans are “brilliant, lots of doctors and judges.” But, are Ohio State fans really this bad? They, he says, are “the only problem” and “they think the world is their bathroom.” He seemed neutral on Michigan fans. Find the full article here.
