‘Tis the season for NFL teams to dump their old coaches and look for new ones. There are a lot of teams in the market for a new coach this season. That’s not a total surprise, but it’s also more head coach openings than normal. It seems as if owners and fanbases are getting less patient with their coaching staffs. If they don’t see immediate results, they want to clean house. Regardless, here are the available NFL head coach openings in 2024, so far, and what to make of them.

Carolina Panthers

David Tepper has a reputation of being, well, a difficult guy for whom to work. He also recently dumped a drink on an opposing team’s fan at a Panthers game, which was not a good look. Add to that a not-so-great roster, and the Panthers don’t seem to be the most attractive team out there looking for a new head coach. But, someone could pick this team up and make magic. We shall see.

Las Vegas Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders have struggled a lot lately, and they have real questions about their quarterbacks and offensive line. So, whoever comes into this situation will have to be very heavy on offensive coaching knowledge.

Tennessee Titans

I actually forgot that Tennessee even had a team until this year. That shows you how low-profile they’ve been for so long. The Titans need lots of help, both on defense and offense.

Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons have been flirting with success the past few years, but just haven’t been able to deliver. But, their offensive line is stacked with young talent in Bijan Robinson, Drake London, Tyler Allgeier and Kyle Pitts. That makes them a desirable team for coaches.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers have some A-listers, but it will be difficult to see them keeping them all due to money challenges. They also have Justin Herbert, who is a great quarterback, but hasn’t been able to deliver like he should, considering his talent. It’s a complicated situation here.

Seattle Seahawks

Why did the Seattle Seahawks get rid of Pete Carroll? I don’t think anybody has a good answer for that. The Seahawks just barely missed the playoffs, 9-8. It certainly wasn’t Carroll’s fault, either. He did an incredible job with the players and staff he was given. But, the Hawks are a promising young team, with Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Devon Witherspoon, Boye Mafe and Zach Charbonnet and more. They also have Kenneth Walker III, who is immensely talented. They need a solid, reliable quarterback, though. And, now, they apparently need a new head coach.

Washington Commanders

I personally believe the Washington Commanders is the most desirable gig for a coach looking to make the big move to head coach. They have some issues with defense, but they have a strong foundation overall. That includes both defense and offense. They also have the most cap space in the NFL right now at roughly $86 million. They could be the team to beat, with the right new head coach and players.
