I’ve been a Detroit Lions fan for a long time, but maybe they should take away my Lions card, because I didn’t realize these blue ski masks were such a thing. What’s funny is that I’m not a Pittsburgh Steelers fan (sorry, guys), but I know all about the “Terrible Towel” that they have at games. It’s impossible to miss the sea of Terrible Towels when you’re watching a Pittsburgh Steelers game on TV. But, the Steelers have die-hard fans all over the country, so it’s easy to be up on knowledge about them. But, back to the Lions. Everyone is going crazy over the Detroit Lions’ blue ski masks. Actually, as it turns out, the ski masks are kind of a new thing, so maybe I get to keep my Lions card.
The story starts with Detroit Lions’ C.J. Gardner-Johnson. During warmups before the game, that they won, against the Kansas City Chiefs, the defensive back wore a blue ski mask.
“I was like, ‘Oh that’s hard,'”Amon-Ra St. Brown said on his podcast after the win. “After the game, I was like, ‘Bro, you need to do that every game. Just you, walk out of that tunnel. You go in the front, you have a ski mask on and we’ll just all be behind you.’ He’s like, ‘Yeah, I’m going to do that.'”
Gardner-Johnson said added, “What did coach and Brad (Holmes) said? We’re villains, right?” He also pushed for Detroit Lions fans to help start this tradition. He asked Lions fans come to Sunday’s (Sept. 17) home game against the Seattle Seahawks wearing a mask. “They’re part of us. It’s our culture. I’m changing it,” Gardner-Johnson said.
Well, now, many of those blue ski masks have sold out. So, the fans took direction well. If you somehow got one of those prized blue ski masks, note that the team has sent out a rule when entering Ford Field: You won’t be allowed to enter the stadium with the mask on. However, once you’re inside the stadium, you can wear it. It makes sense, because you have to go through security, and the police and security people want to see you face as you head into the game.
Ski mask or not, fans are totally pumped for this game. Just in time for the big day, they actually unveiled a huge Barry Sanders statue at Ford Field. Those who attend the game will be the first to see it. View the unveiling below.
Barry Sanders, of course, is considered one of the greatest running backs of all time. He was a bright light with the Detroit Lions, even during their difficult season. During his 10 seasons, all with the Lions, Sanders rushed for 15,269 yards and 99 touchdowns. Even with his greatness, Sanders never got to a Super Bowl with the Lions. The Lions return to Ford Field to open the 2023 home schedule against the Seattle Seahawks at 1 p.m. EDT on Sunday (Sept. 17). Detroit is back for some revenge, followings their tight 48-45 loss against the Seahawks last season. Meanwhile, the Seahawks are looking to redeem themselves after a surprise loss against the L.A. Rams last weekend.
